One look is enough: there is something magical about this place and the surrounding area. Blue and green flow into one another in an almost incomparable way. Like a shining eye from the depths of the earth, a source of myths, fairy tales and all sorts of wondrous stories. One of the most beautiful is probably the “History of the beautiful Lau”, in which Eduard Mörike tells how a mermaid at the Blautopf learns to laugh again. A stone sculpture on the bank is a reminder of her … and on some days she can still be seen briefly in the depths of the spring funnel.
In the middle of the beautiful Maize Valley on the outskirts of Bad Urach is the Urach waterfall, probably the most beautiful waterfall in the Swabian Alb. Here the karst spring plunges in free fall from a height of 37 m and then runs a further 50 m over a steeply sloping, moss-covered tuff limestone cushion down into the valley.
Panoramic ride on the “Blautopfbähnle” through the cloister courtyard, on through the Ried nature reserve over Blaubeuren’s local mountain, the Rucken with fascinating views of the city and Rusenschloss to Klötzle Blei. Then continue along the panorama path to a lookout point above the old town. Short walk to the lookout point, then drive through the charming old town and through the Gerberviertel (“Little Venice”) to the Blautopf.
The Öchsle is a narrow-gauge railway in Württemberg with a gauge of 750 millimeters between the Upper Swabian cities of Biberach an der Riss and Ochsenhausen. A museum train has been operating on the remaining section from Warthausen to Ochsenhausen since 1985. The route runs along its entire length in the Biberach district. With Warthausen, Maselheim and Ochsenhausen, the area is crossed by three communities. The so-called Öchsle cycle path runs parallel to the railway line.

At the Blautopf there is a hammer mill that is powered by the water from the spring.
In 1804, the blacksmith and armorer Abraham Friedrich received from the city of Blaubeuren the approval for a hammer forge with a grinding shop. The hammer forge was operated in its original way until 1889. It was then converted into a mechanical workshop, which was functional until 1956. After that, the Blautopfhaus was only a storage room for the city of Blaubeuren. At the beginning of the 1960s, the tradition of the blue pot house was remembered and the intention was to make it attractive. The search for a hammer forge found a suitable facility in Bad Oberdorf (Allgäu). After the expansion of the Blautopfhaus, the hammer forge was built in over a period of two years. Since the mid-1960s it can be viewed again in its original function.
